Your First Visit

When you walk into an Orthodox church all your senses are invited to participate in the one long prayer we call Divine Liturgy. The first thing you see are colorful icons which are venerated by the faithful to show respect and love. You walk into the Narthex (the entryway into the church), and here you are greeted by the Ushers (if you have questions, they'll be happy to assist you). You may light a candle here, for God said "I am the light of the world" and so we light candles to honor this. Many people take a moment here for a personal prayer. Once you enter into the church itself your senses go into overload as you hear the fantastic chants of the chanters, and the Priests with the choir and parishioners singing to God in a beautiful, prayerful symphony. The church is filled with the gentle smell of incense lifting up our prayers to the heavens, which somehow, miraculously we are now a part of. It is Heaven on Earth, and we invite you to join us.
